Learning Agreement Pilot helps Samantha connect with young minds
Deciding on a career path was childs-play for Samantha Phillipson from Ormskirk who knew she was cut out to work in childcare but just needed to secure the grades to be able to make her ambitions a reality. She discovered the Learning Agreement Pilot, and was soon on her way to success.
Seventeen year old Samantha is known locally for carrying out voluntary work with children in her spare time as well as caring for her grandmother, but with limited qualifications Samantha realised that she could only progress so far in her role as Nursery Assistant at Acorn Nursery and wanted to broaden her career options.
With the support of her employer and Personal Adviser, Samantha began on the Learning Agreement Pilot in 2006 completing her NVQ Level 2 in Child Development. This required her to attend Skelmersdale and Ormskirk College for one day a week whilst completing practical training at work the rest of the time.
Samantha continues, “I really enjoyed going to college and then applying the knowledge at work the same week, it made me understand the reasons behind our working practices and made me want to learn more!”
Samantha has just embarked upon an Apprenticeship in Childcare where she will become fully trained in Health and Safety and learn supervision and teaching techniques.
